Basic health information for travelers to Somalia

• Malaria is present in this country so every precaution needs to be taken in order to avoid infection.

• There are basic hospital facilities in Hargeisa. Elsewhere medical facilities are extremely limited or non-existent.

• Polio remains a major problem in Somalia. With cases occurring outside of the capital there remains the risk of continued spread of wild polio both in Somalia and to neighbouring countries.

• Somalia currently has a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS and all visitors to the country are urged to take great care when dealing with bloody or infected needles or when engaging in sexual activity throughout the course of their visit.

• All travellers should seek medical advice before travelling to the country and ensure that all appropriate vaccinations are up to date.

Basic security information for travelers to Somalia

• There is a high danger from terrorist attacks in Somalia with many regions and borders of the country considered potentially dangerous for foreign visitors. All travellers are strongly advised to check the region of the country that they are planning to visit for any current political or social instability prior to arranging their visit. Whilst inside the country, travellers should exercise great caution when visiting hotel resorts, restaurants, sporting venues or other public locations.

• Criminal activity and conflict is a high possibility there and all travellers will require special permission to enter these regions. Much of the native population has been displaced and left in a state of poverty by the continued violence and all travellers should avoid areas of high unemployment where violence and illegal activity may be rife.

For additional information about travel restrictions, security warnings, political updates, and basic travel guidelines, please contact the nearest Somali Embassy.
